Wasai - 2013
Words cannot begin to describe the love I have for Wasai. Countless visits over the years have turned into a severe fixation that strengthens with every visit!
Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, or with a larger group of friends Wasai caters for all. Japanese cuisine is well represented – the key to enjoying Wasai is ordering with confidence – and make sure you bring your appetite!
Saturday night dinner with the bestie, arriving at 6.30pm - the dining room was buzzing. A big round of applause to the working staff – even when under pressure – their pleasant demeanour rarely disappears. Certainly, no small feat given the restaurants popularity.
We began with a couple of hot Japanese green tea’s – mmmmm so smooth and grassy….a revitalizing antioxidant boost to start the evening.
Shortly after, they arrive with the entrees. Both Aburi Salmon Rolls and Spider Rolls can be described as nothing short of mouthwatering. Surprisingly, it was my first time trying the spider rolls – every bite was pure elation! The soft shell crap was nicely fried and the crab to rice ratio was spot on - the crunchy texture combined with the bold flavours made this an absolute winner.
Same with the Aburi Salmon – I’ve have this sushi countless times - never ceases to amaze me. Wonderfully smooth and creamy – every bite simply melts in your mouth. A Wasai must!
Continuing with the entrée’s we finish with their takoyaki – octopus balls with vegetables, BBQ sauce, mayo and bonito flakes – crisp exterior with a soft, velvety interior – incredibly addictive, I pretty much lived off these snacks when I travelled Japan in 2012.
Moving on to the mains – I opted for Japans famous hotpot, Sukiyaki.
The dish was sublime. The thinly sliced beef pieces were tender and the tofu was silky smooth. Combined with a side of steamed rice – just as good as the sukiyaki I had in Japan. Traditionally, when eating sukiyaki, you dip the ingredients in raw egg before eating. Not this foodie though – I like my eggs cooked thank you very much!
Kat ordered the Soba noodles – they looked scrumptious, albeit very hearty serve – great value nonetheless!
It’s taken me many visits over the years to build the reputation of arguably being the best Japanese eatery in Adelaide (in my eyes). The food is consistently prepared to an incredibly high standard and the staff are knowledgeable of the menu - making dining a sublime experience. Unfortunately, the dining room hasn’t really changed much over the years, therefore it is looking somewhat tired - although soon forgotten once the food arrives!
If you haven’t visited Wasai……you MUST - make a booking, organise some friends and go feast on lip-smacking Japanese noms!
