Singapore House - 2013

Nearly at the age of twenty-five, I consider myself quite the traveling junkie. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some truly spectacular countries and cities across the globe - bar Singapore (bows head in SHAME). I’ll make it one day - but for now, looks like Singapore House will have to be the next best thing.

Located on Glen Osmond Road in Frewville, it’s quite easy to miss as the restaurant front is somewhat of a modest statement - until you step inside…….

The dining room could only be described as awe-inspiring! Not dissimilar to walking into a museum - albeit, no museum would ever serve food of this quality!

Arriving on Wednesday night to a relatively empty dining room, the tables slowly started to occupy as the night night advanced - pretty decent for a suburban restaurant on a weeknight!

Opting for three ‘Street Food’ (entrees) and two mains to share, the young waiter was very accommodating - offering great suggestions and very eager to please.

The crispy soft shell crabappeared looking mighty appealing. A standout dish no doubt, the crab combined with sweet apple salad and the chilli sauce was an ideal match. The flavours were bold and refreshing, I’ll certainly order it again on my next visit.

Salt and pepper tofu- another skillful dish. The tofu was smooth and crispy, definitely one of the best I’ve had in Adelaide.

Baked stuffed mushrooms- PHENOMENAL! Incredible smokey taste, similar to eating some sort of meat dish - unusual but incredibly irresistible, a MUST for any shroom enthusiast!

In hindsight, three entrees was perhaps too much for two people, we were unable to complete any of the three dishes - and boy oh boy how I loathe wasting food!

Spicy beef cheek vindaloo and the potato dumplings arrived in quick succession. The fact that I ordered a dish featuring the word vindaloo in it blows my mind! Spicy food throughout most of my adult life has always hindered many of my foodie experiences - every time I’d eat anything remotely spicy my stomach would FREAK - fast forward to 2013, bring on the heat baby!!

Lol anyway - the vindaloo was lovely. Initial impressions left a lot to be desired in the heat factor, but the beef was fabulously rich and tender. It wasn’t until after the heat kicked in……and it came like a bat out of hell! Perhaps more of a winter dish, but highly recommended for anyone wanting to bring some heat to the table!

The Potato dumplings weren’t bad, but they weren’t fantastic either. Don’t get me wrong, they were perfectly cooked and the flavor combinations were well executed, however - they lacked the WOW factor for me….perhaps the absence of meat? At least this dish was free (Thank you entertainment card)!

If you haven’t visited Singapore House, as an Adeladian, I urge you……GO! Gather your loved ones, make a booking, and indulge yourself in Singaporean goodness.

Until next time, happy eats :)
