Helsinki, Finland 2012
Helsinki in Finland….oh what an adorable seaside city.
Helsinki is one of those places where I wish we had spend more time, as a foodie this gorgeous seaside city was an absolute delight. So many restaurants and eateries, again I felt spoilt for choice.
It’s funny, when planning this trip and Nick presented the idea of coming here, I actually hadn’t heard of this city before (despite being the capital of Finland & the World Design Capital for 2012!). Anyway, I’m so glad we came as it gave me a good chance to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and see the city (and harbor) by foot.
Nick and I were also fortunate enough to even do a day trip to Estonia (as you do!). Funnily enough, my day trip to another country will also be known as Sam’s Food Day. Yes, because we were only in Estonia (Tallinn) for the day and since there weren’t any sightseeing activities (apart from roaming the old city) I wanted to do, food was the focus for the day.
The first place I visited is called Kompressor. In the old part of the city of Tallinn, located down a alleyway is the the very unassuming restaurant that serves traditional Estonian pancakes. OH MY GOODNESS, they were heavenly….and extremely filling! Similar to the French crepe, only much thicker and creamier, they were divine. I had a lunch pancake with mushrooms and cheese and each bite was so creamy smooth, I literally didn’t want it to end. Mental note Sam - master the art of cooking Estonian pancakes.
Craving something sweet (what’s new?!), I embarked on my next destination….dessert. The Pierre Chocolaterie is a gorgeous old fashioned cafe that obviously specializes in all things sweet and chocolaty (they also do savory items too). With a massive range of cakes and chocolates I was definitely spoilt for choice. Letting my stomach decide….I chose the infamous Josephine Cake (chocolate sponge with jam, cream & champagne) and the Chili chocolate square (a rich dark chocolate mud square with chili). My goodness….both were absolutely fantastic….the Josephine was an absolute flavor explosion, the champagne really highlighting the chocolate flavor, truly one of a kind! The chili square equally delicious, the chili being subtle enough to give it a fantastic kick without being overpowering. All the staff at Pierre were all extremely friendly too, it truly was a superb experience (an absolute must visit if your ever in Tallinn). Yes….Estonia will always hold a special place in my heart.
Again, if I were to ever return to Northern Europe (I know I will), Helsinki will without a doubt be on the list. A city full of surprise, and breathtaking beauty, I can truly understand why it was named World Design Capital for 2012. Kiitos!
The Scandinavian journey continues to Oslo in Norway….not far away friends!
