Chez Dre - 2013
Continuing from my last post of Three Bags Full on my whirlwind weekend away in Melbourne, brunch on day two found Kat and I visiting Chez Dre, in Melbourne’s south.
Hidden from the bustling Coventry Street, the the cafe’s interior is deceptively spacious. With a booming open kitchen, featuring plenty of indoor and outdoor tables, the cafe was lively on this Sunday morning.
Only waiting 10-15 minutes for a table, the staff were welcoming and affable. Seated in the middle of the inside dining room, the morning sun bathing the interior through the large glass windows, it was truly serene.
Offering an all day breakfast menu, with many enticing breakfast options, I was sold when my eyes saw Mushroom Ragu.
Featuring Swiss, field & button mushrooms, parmesan polenta, with a poached egg and truffle oil - the every mouthful was pure elation - smooth, velvety and full of flavour, the combination of the soft polenta mixed with the egg and mushrooms - the taste wasn’t dissimilar to the infamous mushroom raguat Adelaide’s Bar 9. AKA - lip smacking deliciousness!
Kat ordered the glazed pork belly incorporating jalepeno & corn polenta cake, avocado puree & poached eggs. Insisting I try the meat, she certainly chose an appealing dish. The pork was beautifully succulent, with the perfect meat to fat ratio - all kind of yummers!
Eyes heavily fixated on the sugar laden scrumptiousness on display, I couldn’t deny myself some of their gorgeous cakes.
Ordering the Green Tea, Kalamanzi & muscovado sugarand Hazelnut-Praline crunchfor takeaway, having them for an afternoon treat (once breakky digested) was another heavenly experience. Both cakes were flavoursome and oh so compelling! A must for any sweet tooth!
Chez Dre’s an absolute winner. Its easy to understand the cafe’s popularity - the food, staff and ambience all top notch! If you haven’t visited, GO….NOW. Be warned - the cakes are addictive!
Adelaideians and Melbournites, until next time, happy eats :)
