Burgers in Sydney - Mary’s
Foodies of Sydney - DON’T say you’ve had the best burger in Sydney UNTIL you’ve visited Mary’s!
On a recent trip to Sydney for the Cake, Bake and Sweets show- a Saturday night dinner with good friend and food blogger Christine from Cooking Crusade, we opted for Mary’s in Newtown.
Deceptively located in a quiet side street, the dingy looking entrance had a very cult-like feel as we entered the dimly lit restaurant/bar. THE PLACE WAS BUZZING!! With a bar and casual dining area downstairs and table service upstairs, Mary’s has a totes FETCH feel to it #meangirlsreference ;)
Quite simply, you come to Mary’s for the burgers - and the fried chicken; oh and they do a mean mash and gravy too! Anyway…..whatever the reason - these guys know good nosh - like seriously MELT IN YOUR MOUTH good nosh.
Here’s what we ordered:
‘Shroom Burger
Hands down one of the best vego burgers I’ve ever had. Succulent and oh so juicy, the mushroom had a tenderised hearty texture that worked in perfect unison with the cheese, lettuce and mustard. The buns were soft and relatively sweet too…..reminding me of the bread top buns that Burger Theory use back in Adelaide. I’m not vegetarian, but I could be after devouring this beauty!
Mary’s Burger
What can I say…..same burger, just replacing the mushroom with a beef patty. Christine cut me a slice, and again, it didn’t disappoint. Yes, one might say its a glamorised Maccas burger, which it probably is…..but I’m sorry Maccas, you definitely CAN’T TOUCH THIS - not even close actually. Phht - silly fast food chain ;)
Fried Chicken - half size
ALL HAIL THE FRIED CHICKEN!! Feeling satisfied from the burger, I only had a small amount, but lordy lordy this was damn fine fried chicken. Crispy, not too oily yet not too dry, the outer texture had a addictive spiciness, very moorish indeed!
Mash and gravy.
Damn gurl, is there such a thing as a mash addiction?? Political correctness aside - YES THERE IS, and it’s caused by Mary’s! Creamy and oh so velvety - I’m sorry mother, but I think Mary’s mash might have the edge here. Certainly one of the best mash & gravy’s I’ve experienced - anywhere.
Unfortunately, Mary’s don’t take bookings, so plan on having an early dinner if you don’t want to stand by for a table - otherwise, it’s totes worth the wait for an upstairs table. The staff were great - casual, friendly and actually appeared to be enjoying themselves.
Sydneyite’s - I urge you, if you haven’t been to Mary’s - SHAME ON YOU - lol just kidding, but you should totes give it a visit. I enjoyed it - I reckon you will too! As for the wonderful city of Sydney……I’ll be back again soon!
Until next time, happy eats :)
